The Process of the Contest

This year 750 coffee lots were presented in the different municipalities of the country.

This competition is unique in Colombia in that every coffee grower of every region in the country can participate.

To enter, the coffee growers visited the closest point of purchase of the Cooperatives, to deliver the full lot and to get paid for the coffee. All the 750 coffees were bought and paid to the producers with a premium price as a recognition of the quality and effort of the producers.

All the coffee was then transported to the warehouses of Almacafé, the logistics operator for the FNC.

The Process of the Contest

A group of cuppers of Almacafé, in four main labs in Popayán, Medellín, Pereira and Bogotá did the selection of the lots with 86+ score on the SCA cupping protocol. From the 750 lots that participated, 214 passed to the second cupping round.

The second round, held in Viotá, Cundinamarca, was done by expert cuppers from Almacafé and the FNC. The best lots of every region were cupped to select the best lots from the 214 cupped. The decision was not easy, so many flavours and notes!

The third round was held in Bucaramanga, Santander where the cuppers evaluated the final lots to select the best of the best. Now, the top lots are selected and international judges from different parts of the world are giving their own scores and getting positively impressed!

The Colombia Land of Diversity contest also recognizes coffees with a specific cupping protocol. With this cupping protocol, the coffee grower understands the different attributes and characteristic that his/her coffee has.

The Five attributes evaluated includes:

  • Acidity
  • Balance
